The Ontario Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (ONPEA) invites submissions for papers, workshops and posters to be presented at the Annual ONPEA Conference being held on November 3rd - 4th, 2009 in Toronto, Ontario. This National Conference welcomes participants from across Canada to participate and present at this unique event.

The theme of this year’s conference is “National Perspectives on Elder Abuse: Join the Conversation.” The intent of the conference is to facilitate knowledge exchange amongst stakeholders from across Canada about ”promising approaches” in elder abuse prevention and intervention.

The conference themes will include legislation, justice system responses, legal and law practices, intervention practices, research, community and health programs, educational  and awareness initiatives and government strategies.

Interdisciplinary abstracts are encouraged. Abstracts must be submitted by June 24, 2009.

This conference provides an excellent opportunity for individuals and organizations to highlight key developments in the area of elder abuse. Your experience gained through practical applications and/or research is vital to the promotion and sharing of promising approaches in the field. Over 300 delegates are expected at the conference.

STREAMS

Submissions are encouraged in the following topic areas and those which also address ethno-specific communities, seniors with mental health issues, gay/lesbian transgendered communities, northern and rural communities, First Nations communities, and the Francophone population.

The following list highlights key areas for consideration, but all topics will be considered.

HEALTH
This stream deals with informing stakeholders on initiatives that include the development or implementation of elder abuse screening tools for health care professionals, policies within organizations/long-term care homes/hospitals, medical investigative resources, emerging practices and research on the health and economic impacts of elder abuse. Examples: agency or hospital policies, screening tools, staff training within community and/or care facilities, morbidity and mortality research, forensic health care.

SOCIAL
This stream will focus on programs, services and interventions that assist in achieving and maintaining the health and wellness of older adult victims such as effective strategies for working with older victims, counseling, peer support, housing/shelters, and safety planning. This stream also looks at the latest trends/issues in research on programs addressing mental health, capacity, and addictions.

JUSTICE
This stream will explore law enforcements capacity to investigate and intervene in situations of elder abuse and highlight challenges faced by the justice sector in detecting, documenting and confirming abuse and neglect. Papers may review the process in prosecuting cases of elder abuse including interviewing strategies, investigative techniques, access to information, privacy legislation of working with health and community sectors and innovative ways for data collection to track elder abuse crimes including neglect and exploitation. This stream may also review existing case law, issues related to evidence (i.e. hearsay) and court supports for older adults. Case studies can be used to illustrate these issues.

GOVERNMENT STRATEGIES

This stream will facilitate the sharing of federal, provincial and territorial strategies and approaches for preventing and tackling elder abuse. Programs and campaigns that have been developed to enhance awareness and promote the prevention of elder abuse within communities and/or care facilities will be discussed. This may include media campaigns, effective marketing programs, educational programs, and innovative training curriculums.

LEGISLATIVE FRAMEWORKS

This stream will review the federal legislation in Canada as it pertains to elder abuse and neglect cases. Papers should address legislative frameworks within the provinces and territories and explain how they enable police, health and community agencies to assist older adults at risk or abused. This session will also highlight the challenges with existing legislative frameworks (i.e. what is and is not working).

NETWORK/COLLABORATIVE APPROACHES
This stream will provide the sharing of models and approaches that reflect “collaboration” across sectors. These include collaborative approaches among and between national, provincial, territorial  and community networks and organizations. Papers should highlight innovative approaches used in working together to promote awareness and education, solutions for overcoming barriers (i.e. developing interagency understandings/ protocols) mechanisms for building community capacity and response and sustainable networks. The successful outcomes of programs can also be discussed.

TEAM APPROACHES
It is becoming increasingly evident that solutions to elder abuse must involve an interdisciplinary approach. Papers will address successful models of interdisciplinary collaborative efforts and programs that foster cross-disciplinary relationships that enhance elder abuse responses. These include approaches such as multi-disciplinary teams, intervention teams, specialized police units.
